While serving in the USAF I annually qualified in either the .38 or 9 mm handgun. I also fired the M-16 once. Twenty years after retirement I decided to buy the Springfield Armory XDM 40 caliber pistol for home defense. I was worried about the kick and the fact it was an semi automatic. I am a novice. After firing the XDM I must say I am really impressed by this gun. The kick is nothing to worry about and even my wife wants to learn how to fire it. I was surprize that a 66 year old man who has not fired in many years can still consistently hit the center mass-mostly in the center ring. The high cxapacity magazine works like advertized - you put bullets in and they come out when you want them too. It is easy to field strip and clean. So far it has not jammed or causes me problems.
